Is Aikido effective in a real street fight?
How does it compare to other styles of martial arts?
I want to learn wushu for street fights…so will it the be right one for street fights?
I'll not moralise the issue here as the object of wushu is not just to fight. To use Chinese Wushu for street fights will require you to have ample practice in fixed sparring sessions and 'sanda' or 'sanshou' which is the equivalent to free sparring. I'll not recommend you to use the techniques blindly from the routines. Just remember one quaint Chinese saying: ” A flurry of (of non-martial arts) strikes will kill the old master” and one more very practical advice from Sun Ping (grandson of Sun Tze of “Sun Tze's Art of War fame) that of all the (36) stratagems, the best is still “to run away (run from imminent danger)”.
I must add that not all wushu are geared for students to apply the techniques for direct street fights after a short training stint. Perhaps, the Southern wushu schools should be of interest to you, especially the following schools: White Crane (Tibetan and Fukein), Wu-chu or Ngo-chor (5-ancestors), Tai-chu or Tai-chor (Grand Ancestor) Fu-chia (Buddha-school), Wing Chun, Hung, Chai, Li, Mok, and Zhou-chia. The latter, Zhou-chia is one of the recent schools having established itself only during the Republic of China's days. It combined the essences of a number of schools, notably, Northern Shaolin, Hung and Chai, into a single entity. You will find this school in America.
Is wing chun useful in a street fight?
Is close range punching useful in a fight? Look at how people fight (not compete in martial arts tournments or MMA competition) at least in the U.S.. Its usually close range punching. So yes Wing Chun is valuable. Probally more so than Karate or a Northern Style Kung Fu. I took kung Fu as a teen. the problem most people have is realizing what is for the classroom and what you really use in a fight. Half of what is taught in Martial arts are techniques to display mastery of the art or competition for example the Axe kick. Once you start to realize what toi use and what to discard during a fight you better prepared to defend yourself. boxing is the same way, yet no one ever asks if boxing is relevant for self defense. if you are a boxer and fight youll start doing things that are not allowed in boxing like knees to the groins, headbutts, and elbows. Same with kung Fu and Karate the straight kick is better on the knee than the stomach, but you might not do that in class and diffianently not in competition. So yes Wing Chun is useful in a street fight
