It is imperative that we get the concept that the first strike is the most important strike after all negotiations have been exhausted in the face of a street confrontation. Now comes the question, should you always look to execute the preferred or the favorite first strike, or should you execute whatever first strike that is available and that you see that would be effective in that particular situation?
There are 4 reasons why you should always execute the most available and the most effective first strike rather the preferred first strike.
The 4 Reasons To Attack The First Vital Area Versus Your Favorite First Strike
Reason # 1 – Street Fighting Is Dynamic And You Can’t Always Predict In What Position The Opponent Will Be – Depending on whatever the angle and position of your attacker, you may have to use alternative preferred first strikes that will be as equally as devastating and that will enable you to put momentum on your side in order to be able to finish off the attack and end the threat.
Reason # 2 – There Should Never Be Any ONE Preferred First Strike Technique – You should have at least 3 or 4 multiple variations of effective preferred first strikes. Many of the expert street fighting instructors that I know of utilize – foot stomps, throat strikes, eye jabs and even throwing liquid and objects like dirt and sand into the eyes as the first strike.
Reason # 3 – Your Distance And Your Environment Will Determine What The First Strike Will Be – If you are in a corner with your back to the wall, and an assailant has approached you and is in your face, then the most obvious first strike in this situation would be a sudden and ferocious head butt to the bridge of his nose with the hardest part of your forehead, the part where your forehead meets your hairline, which will cause your attacker’s eyes to water thus mess up his vision.
Reason # 4 – Street Fighting Is ALWAYS About Implementing That Which Is Most Obvious And Logical For That Particular Situation – This means, you must always execute that which is available and will be most effective. It may include your favorite first strike or it may not, but you must always adapt yourself to what’s before you in order to make your first strike the most effective and the most devastating.
So, these are the reasons why you should always execute the available first strike rather than waiting for the opening to apply your favorite technique.

Before you can go about searching for the right self defense instructor, it is of utmost importance to understand that if your goal is to learn reality-based street fighting then, you will need to find an teacher with the real-world experience to support any of the black belts or awards he or she may have won.
After having been in the world of martial arts and self protection for several years now, it has become very apparent to me that there are three types of fighting instructors that are most suited for teaching street fighting. The first thing that I want to emphasize is that they may or may not have a black belt in a particular style or fighting system. Having a black belt is admirable, but in and of itself is not an absolute indicator of the best that teacher you will find.
#1 Most Qualified: Personal Body Guards (Especially Those That Are High Level Who Protect Diplomats and Politicians) – If you are lucky enough to find someone who is a black belt AND has had real world experience as a body guard, you can be sure that they know and are capable of using only that which will work 99% of the time. No fancy stances. No exotic postures or loud breathing through their nostrils while they move their hands and arms in slow circles in front of an opponent. Professional body guards are trained to have a high level awareness of danger and the deadly ability to respond. This is what counts in the streets.
#2 Most Qualified: Professional Bouncers – Two of the most trained fighters that I know and are also my teachers, Norm Bettencourt of Vancouver, B.C. Canada and Christopher “Bob” Roberts residing in Frankfurt, Germany, both black belts, have had extensive experience working the doors of night clubs which become a magnet for trouble as people start to drink and become rowdy and belligerent. The fact is that most bouncers see and are involved in more fights and altercations than most policemen in the course of a regular working day or night.
#3 Most Qualified: Military Combatants – The absolute best trainer that you can get is a black belt AND ex-military commando. Now we are talking about all around fighting machines. These are the proud men of our armed forces: Green Berets, Navy SEALS and Special Forces. Many of these type of instructors have had hand-to-hand combat and have stared death in the face many times. Who would be better to teach you how to handle the mugger in the streets than these guys? I guess that again I have been super blessed to also to have been trained by Andy Curtiss, of Fayetteville, North Carolina, black belt and ex-Green Beret. I can speak from personal first-hand experience is that when you are taught martial arts from the combative perspective, you can really learn what you need to know in as little as one weekend or in total of as little as 12 hours.

In this age of the quick fix, everybody wants instant answers. The masses want riches without working, skill without practice, and the ability to win a fight with one ‘guaranteed’ move. Have you been reading articles in search of ways to win a street fight every time? Well, I have some good news and some bad news….
Self Defense Reality
For some, this may sound like bad news, but it makes perfect sense. There is no one who can win a street fight every time. That person just doesn’t exist — no matter what you read in the hyped ebook sell pages.
Not only does the ultimate fighter not exist in this day and age, but there is no “one method” that works every time. If there were, then we’d have a paradox the instant more than one person knew the technique. If the move is guaranteed to work, and two fighters use it on each other, then one of them has to lose.
Note: It’s rare that two fighters knock each other out at the exact same time, where both would lose and neither would win.
Good Streetfighting News
The good news is that you can significantly lessen the number of bad people in the world who can do you harm. As you acquire more and more skill, the number of jerks who can overcome you in an attack goes down.
Keep training. Continue learning. And you’ll improve your odds of coming out the winner in an altercation.
More Streetfighting Bad News
Those looking for an instant fix will probably be disappointed. In a confrontation, if one fighter has significantly more skill in fighting and knows practical application of martial skills, then that person will win. No surprise there, right?
So, if you want to get good at street fighting and self defense, you will have to practice. For some people reading these words, this will be the place to click away. (Yes, that’s the easy way … don’t read what you don’t want to know.)
And Even More Street-Fighting Disappointment
Not only will you have to practice, in order to gain enough skills to survive a street fight, but you’ll have to practice the “right stuff” — the “good stuff.”
You will most likely have to go beyond single articles — even this one. Articles will just give you cursory information. They aren’t complete enough in and of themselves to give you any sort of complete training.
Learn Self Defense — The Good News
It’s much better to find a punch ecourse, or a book on wrist locks — train one element at a time. Focus on one aspect of the martial arts.
Note: If there is good martial arts instruction in your area, then joining the class is much better than trying to go it alone. If you aren’t taking classes, then you’ll need a training partner. You have to be able to practice and perfect what you read.
Eventually, combine those aspects … learn how to stop the attack with a punch or a kick, take control with a lock, and then shut down further aggression, counter attacks, and escapes with more kicks, punches, and joint controls.
The good news is that by taking learning into your own hands, you’ll change styles, add elements from different martial systems, practice with a variety of partners, and improve at your own rate.
Some of the best martial artists in the world eventually design their own training schedules and get their own workout partners.
