Can You Practice Street-Fighting Techniques Solo?
There has always been a debate as to whether you could actually learn to defend yourself while working out solo.
Would you be surprised if I said that the answer is both yes AND no?
Look, if you really want to get the feeling of fighting against a street fighter, then you have to fight. That’s all there is to it. Or you have to practice in as close to real situation as possible. This is why five million people in the U.S. practice martial arts.
This follows the argument of “you can read the mechanics of bicycle riding in ten books, but until you actually experience getting on a bicycle, you won’t know the kinesthetics of pumping the pedals, maintaining balance, and a host of other mini-skills needs to stay atop the bike.”
So, at some point, you are going to have to practice against a real, live person. An opponent. (And no, I am not suggesting that you go picking fights in the name of practicing in a real situation. Be smart — stay safe.)
There is a lot you can do on your own to prepare for a street fight:
* Get aerobically fit. It’s important.
* Practice punching and kicking every day. WIthout practice, your punches will feel like jelly. With practice, you can keep them honed.
* Shadow box, go for 30-second rounds on a heavy bag — practice series of hits and kicks. Keep moving.
* Keep reading about street fighting tactics … practice what you read.
* Mentally practice. Imagine what you’d do in a variety of street attacks.
I guarantee that if you keep practicing, even if you are solo, that you’ll fare better than someone out of shape who never thinks about street fights or martial arts.
Really.

I like keeping things simple. I don’t want to show you hundreds of variations and concepts to defend yourself. After putting that much into your brain, I would have given you enough data to keep you confused in any quick reaction-time life or death situation. I only need to give you 4 secrets to winning every fight.
Now, keep in mind that when I talk about these factors in relationship to fighting, we are of course trying to predict the future. When there is any attempted prediction of the future what we are really talking about is the high or low probability of an occurrence. These 4 factors that I am about to give you now will increase exponentially the probability that you WILL win the fight.
So, let’s get down to business.
The 4 Critical Factors To Win Every Fight:
Critical Factor To Winning #1 – He Who Strikes First Wins – This is the first principle factor that you must know about any potential street confrontation. If you know that it’s about to go down–strike first. Generally, the best first strike is a palm strike to the tip of the chin, twisting it violently to the side increasing the propensity for a knockout because of the nasty things that this blow does to the the neck and spinal cord nerves. An eye rake, tiger claw style, with the fingers raking down from under the eyebrow to over the open or closed eyelids will also do the trick. Remember, your hands must have already been up in the faux- submissive pose of “Look I don’t want any trouble”–when–”Pow!”, you strike him in the middle of your sentence.
Critical Factor To Winning #2 – He Who Escalates The Violence Wins – After your first strike, keep on striking! You must escalate the violence and become the relentless aggressor to put your opponent out of his element and become on the defensive which means that you are now the person who is driving the bus.
Critical Factor To Winning #3- He Who Has And Uses A Weapon Wins – First of all let us define “weapon”. My operational definition of a weapon is any tool, object, instrument or body part that enhances and accelerates the victory of a fight. Though I would never recommend a sword, nunchakus or shoryuken stars or any other ancient and impractical weapon, I would however suggest, in any life threatening situation, pepper spray or quickly stabbing the eyes or throat with a door or car key.
Critical Factor To Winning #4- He Who Bites First Wins – Biting is the wild card that few martial artists will prepare for or will utilize. The vast majority of all would-be street fighters would never even consider biting. Grab the head, and bite the cheeks. Bite the ear. Bite the nose. If your grappling and are on the ground with an assailant on top of you, bite the nipples; bite the inner thigh, or bite the groin. You bite whatever is available and closest to your mouth. Bite like a bull dog.
Be cognizant of and do these 4 things, and more often than not, you will be the last man standing.

One of the first principles in obtaining and possessing a weapon is knowing how to use it. Pepper spray is one of the few easily accessible designated weapons that is not only simple to carry and very effective – but only – if you know how to use it properly.
The 7 Secrets To Effectively Using Pepper Spray
Secret #1 – Step To The Outside of Your Opponent’s Face – This first secret is all about positioning. When you spray, take your right foot and step to the outside of your opponent’s right foot, thus moving your body to the outside of his instead of standing directly in front of him. So, when he screams and grabs for his face and momentarily tries to blindly extend his arms out toward you, he will be reaching for air.
Secret #2 – Make Your Follow Up Strikes “Below the Waist And Away from The Face” – When your opponent gets hit with the pepper spray in the face and in the eyes, his eyes lids will be forced shut through an autonomic muscular reflex. He will not be able to open his eyes for several minutes. But now, he has the burning chemicals of the spray on his hands and face.
- You want to avoid striking his face, as you will contaminate your hands. Therefore, since your position is already to the side of him, your follow up strike could be either a knee stomp or a hammer fist to the back of the head.
Secret #3 – Use The Tip of The Metal Cylinder of The Key-Chain Type Pepper Spray As A Follow Up Strike To the Ribs – The container of the spray in and of itself is an expedient weapon. After you spray and move to the side, strike him multiple times in the ribs with the tip of the metal cylinder container of the spray.
Secret #4 – Position Your “Non-Combatant” To The Side And The Back of You – A non-combatant is anyone who cannot be involved in the combat, such as your child or your spouse. Instruct them beforehand that whenever you are in a potential self protection situation where you may have to use your pepper spray, that they position themselves to the left side and in back of you.
Secret #5 – Look For An Object Behind Your Assailant – Then Spray – Ideally, if you can position the altercation such that your opponent is standing in front of a box, crate or the edge of the sidewalk, when you spray and hit, he will fall backward over the object or off the sidewalk that is behind him. When he falls back and onto the ground, follow up with knee stomps or ankle stomps so that you have incapacitated him from getting back up – even though he still can’t see anything.
Secret #6 – Practice Your Pepper Spray Techniques Using “Silly Spray” – You’ve seen that stringy foam that is sprayed from the cans that children use at parties and gatherings. I just call it “silly spray”. Since you can’t practice your techniques with real spray, use this kids party spray as a substitute to validate the effectiveness of your techniques when you practice with a partner.
Secret #7 -Always Spray Your Opponent’s Face With The Wind And Never Against The Wind – You want to avoid spraying into the wind so that the spray doesn’t blow back into your face!
